These days, I see a lot of new homeschoolers getting excited to set up a homeschool room but overwhelmed at the same time. I see you moms. As an unschooler, the world is Zoe's classroom. We learn anywhere and everywhere. But now that we're transitioning to Eclectric homeschooling, I decided to share our homeschool room.
Oh, if you're looking into getting a printer, I have a list of the topmost recommended printer here. Since I am a single mom, I need to be practical so I got the Epson L3110 and so far so good. Let me know if you want a detailed review of it.
Going back, I get this question a lot lately, "Do we need a homeschool room to homeschool or not?". Well, the answer varies per family. Setting up your homeschool room or space depends on your lifestyle, resources, budget, and number of kids.
While there are lots of instagrammable homeschool set up on the internet especially on Pinterest, let me share some tips on how to set up your homeschool room that worked for me.
5 Tips On How To Setup A Homeschool Room.
1. Make it simple.
Let's not focus on aesthetics too much. The simple the better. As much as possible find room with natural light. Having a well-lit room can help you create a brighter and calmer room that can make learning easier and more engaging for your kids.
This room is Zoe's playroom and homeschool area so across our table is Zoe's Kitchen.
2. Keep the clutter down.
Zoe hates clutter because she gets distracted by it. Use boxes to store toys and bins to keep the clutter down. For Zoe's worksheets, curriculum, and activities, I use an expandable envelope per subject to stay organized.
3. Make things accessible to your kids.
I always make sure that almost everything is accessible to Zoe since she's a baby. Use low shelves or bins. It gives them the freedom to work on anything that sparks their interests anytime.
By making things accessible for Zoe, it also allows her to explore, create, and discover things independently with little guidance needed. So most of the time, she works on something and rarely gets bored. See, it's possible to raise an unplugged kid.
4. Use your wall.
Make use of your wall to display your kid's artwork, education charts, maps, whiteboard, and other learning materials. But remember, don't put up too much so your kids won't get distracted. I suggest giving them their own space if possible and let them decorate it.
5. Invest in a sturdy table and chair.
Zoe's been using this 5-year-old convertible high chair and still sturdy. Such a great find! I see lots of adjustable tables and chairs but a bit pricey. Be sure to check more options before buying. And place your table facing the wall to keep them focused and less distracted.
I hope you find this article helpful especially for new homeschoolers. I know it's sometimes tempting to make instagrammable spaces but know that what matters is to keep things simple to make homeschool effectively. Use whatever you have, be practical, do what works for your family and lastly be flexible, and just enjoy your journey.
So to answer the question, do you need a homeschool room to homeschool or not? Well, the answer varies per family. As for me, having a dedicated homeschool room helped me stay organized, flexible, gives Zoe more opportunity to learn and play by having a prepared environment and I can juggle work, housework while teaching and playing with her at the same time. Talk about multitasking. Haha
Always remember that homeschooling is a lifestyle, embrace it, and be creative! Cheering on you. Oh, and if you have a homeschool room, we'd love to see your space as well!
